The Farmborough family were members of the Society of Friends also known as Quakers. Thomas Farmborough the Elder was a cane chair maker of London. He had one son who willed his property to his five married nieces, Mercy Barber, Susannah How, Hannahbella Bell, Gulielma Zachary, and Mariabella Eliot.
